How to Use the Shopify Fees Calculator?

The Shopify fees calculator is very easy to use. Just follow these four steps:

How to calculate Shopify Fees
  1. Enter your monthly orders: This is the number of sales you make (or expect to make) each month in your store. Most new stores see between 10 and 50 orders per month in their first few months.
  2. Set your average order value: How much does a customer spend on average per purchase? If you’re not sure, divide your monthly revenue by your number of orders. This figure is key because Shopify’s fees are calculated on the amount of each sale.
  3. Choose your billing cycle: Shopify offers a 25% off if you pay for your plan annually. If you’re committed to running your store long-term, annual billing will save you a good amount of money. If you’re still testing the waters, start with monthly billing.
  4. Select your payment gateway: With Shopify Payments, you only pay the standard per-sale processing fees. But if you use a third-party gateway (Stripe, Monei, PayPal, etc.), Shopify charges an additional transaction fee of 2%, 1%, or 0.6%, depending on your plan. In practice, Shopify Payments almost always works out cheaper.

Where Is Shopify Payments Available?

Shopify Payments is available in the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, and most of Western Europe, among other markets. If your country isn’t supported, you’ll need a third-party gateway like Stripe or PayPal, which adds Shopify’s extra transaction fee. Check Shopify’s help center for the full list of supported countries.

Which Shopify Plan Should You Choose Based on Your Revenue?

Here’s which Shopify plan we recommend based on your situation and your store’s monthly revenue.

Up to $30,000/month: Basic Plan

If you’re just starting out or haven’t reached 50 sales a month yet, this is your plan. For $39 a month plus transaction fees, you get everything you need to launch your Shopify store, and just two or three orders will cover the subscription. On the downside, it has the highest transaction fee: 2.9% + 30¢ per sale.

$30,000 to $150,000/month: Grow Plan

Once you pass roughly $30,000 a month, the Grow plan pays for itself: it costs $66 more than Basic but lowers your card rate to 2.7% + 30¢ per sale. It also adds automations, shipping discounts, abandoned cart recovery, five staff accounts, and more detailed eCommerce reports.

Choose It for the Features, Not the Price: Advanced Plan

The savings on fees alone won’t justify it: the extra $294 a month over Grow only pays off once you reach around $147,000 in monthly revenue. Upgrade only if you need its 15 staff accounts, plan to sell internationally, or want advanced reports and duties and import taxes calculated at checkout.

From $1 Million a Year: Shopify Plus

It makes sense for businesses with B2B catalogs, in-person sales across dozens of locations with Shopify POS, a customized checkout, or unlimited staff accounts. Pricing starts at $2,300 a month on a one- to three-year contract, with card rates from 2.15% + 30¢.

What Costs Aren’t Included in the Subscription?

On top of your Shopify subscription, there are other costs you’ll need to factor in to keep your store running.

  • Domain name: Around $10–20 a year, bought through a domain registrar or directly from Shopify.
  • Premium theme (optional): A one-time payment of $100 to $400. You can start with a free theme like Dawn. Check out our list of the best Shopify themes for more options.
  • Shopify apps: From $5 a month per app up to hundreds of dollars, depending on the features.
  • Web design (optional): If you hire a Shopify development agency to help build your store.

Our recommendation: start with a free theme like Dawn and activate Shopify Payments to avoid the extra fees that come with third-party gateways. If you’re committed to your store for the long haul, paying annually will save you up to 25% on your subscription.

When it comes to Shopify apps, install only the essentials, and no more than three at first. Before paying for one, try Shopify’s own free tools, such as Shopify Email (for sending newsletters), Shopify Messaging (a live chat widget), or abandoned cart recovery.

FAQs

Here are some frequently asked questions about starting an online store on Shopify.

What Percentage Does Shopify Take?

Shopify’s fee depends on your plan. With Shopify Payments, Shopify’s built-in payment gateway, you’ll pay between 2.5% and 2.9% + 30¢ per online card transaction in the US. If you use a third-party gateway, Shopify charges an extra 0.6% to 2% per sale on top of your provider’s own processing fees.

What Does a Shopify Subscription Really Cost?

Beyond the monthly fee listed on Shopify’s official pricing page, every sale comes with a card processing fee (a percentage plus a fixed 30¢) when you use Shopify Payments. If you use a third-party gateway instead, Shopify adds an extra fee per transaction. That’s why the real cost of a Shopify subscription depends on how much you sell.
